From Liverpool to Leith - debut album from SheBeat out now on Bandcamp

From Liverpool to Leith is the debut album from singer songwriter SheBeat. Created over the last few years with husband producer Ian White (Sons of the Descent/ The Wendys), this record is from the heart and a new Scottish Indie Folk Pop classic. A Leith lovechild, available now on Bandcamp as a digital release, and to order on vinyl and CD https://shebeatmusic.bandcamp.com/. Other streaming sites will be available soon.

"I'm infatuated with this song [Whether]. SheBeat makes super infectious pop and I love it It's a really great album, check it out."

BBC SCOTLAND RODDY HART SHOW Jill O'Sullivan

Somehow in the gaps of their busy lives, this artist and producer team have put together a fantastic collection of songs for this debut long player from the Liverpool singer songwriter, now based in Leith. The title of the album From Liverpool to Leith came from a fringe-Fringe show of the same name written and performed by SheBeat in August 2022 which told the story of SheBeat from her humble cellar dwelling beginnings to feeling the sunshine on Leith.

The songs are carefully curated from the SheBeat catalogue, along with a new love song Whether written together. There are gorgeous remastered and reworkings of previously recorded songs - Impossible, Believe, Freaky, Rainproof, Feels Like and Catch Your Breath - the latter featuring a smorgasbord of talented musical pals from across the world (more details below). Popular singles are included too, remastered, and will see their first physical release on vinyl and CD (Homecoming Queen, Rock N Roll Witch and So Into You) for this long player.

SheBeat Jodie said: “This has been a labour of love, literally, making music with Ian is one of my favourite things to do. Like most people, we are very busy with work and family, plus we have a very healthy social life and since lockdown have become total telly addicts, so it’s been a huge effort to find the time, energy and head space to put this together. I wouldn’t have made it without Ian’s encouragement, so I keep thanking him for this record existing. He knows how much it means to me as an artist to have this record in the world. We’re working class artists on a DIY budget and timeline, so getting art made is sometimes an achievement in itself. And I’ve been blown away by his creative producer skills. I’m a poet with stories and some cowboy chords. Ian is the master producer, musician and engineer. This album marks 10 years of my writing, performing and recording music, so it’s a massive milestone for me. And I’m so thrilled that we have created this together in Leith.”

One of my favourite things about being a part of the independent UK music scene is the people I’ve met while playing at gigs up and down the country over the last decade. Music is magic and has gifted this a supportive, creative community. This inspired a collaborative reworking of my song Catch Your Breath which features a sprinkling of talented folks - Sarah Gallagher, Iain King (Sleekit), Zöe Howe, Daniel McGeever and my sister Victoria Galitzine all provide additional vocals, while my brother-in-law Bobby Hanson is on bass, and Quinn Lam is on lead guitar. I wish we could have put more of my friends on it, but we didn’t want to overdo it. The song sounds joyful with my pals singing and playing along which is perfect for this ‘chin up tune’ for a dreary day.”

WHATS NEXT

“I’ll be promoting the album with a UK tour - keep an eye on my socials for details @shebeatmusic - and we’re putting a band together to collaborate on some new music.

Next year I’m taking part in a theatre show for the first time which should be interesting. It’s called Under The Mersey Moon with original songs written by my friends Jimmy Rae and Peter Davies. I’ll be continuing the Afternoon Delight live shows we started this year, showcasing fantastic new music from the Scottish Music Scene, plus I’ll carry on presenting and producing SheBeat’s Scottish Music Scene every first Friday of the month for Louder Than War Radio.”

ARTWORK

“The cover art is a photo of an early Cavern gig in Liverpool taken by my friend Tequila. The physical vinyl and CD reverse side artwork features a new photo from Leith Depot taken by my friend Trevor Pake. Both photos are taken at legendary music venues which felt like the perfect illustration of the album title.”

In the Leith photo you see SheBeat Jodie and Ian White enjoying a pint of the black stuff in the window for maximum Hopper Nighthawks vibes. Also on the physical copies of the album is a line portrait by SheBeat’s sister Victoria Galitzine, an English artist now based in the sunshine state of California.

A philosophical SheBeat classic in the making, ‘Home’ with its theme of belonging, evokes nesting instincts that came to the fore when the pandemic saw many of us at home a lot more often. Life inspired art.

The artwork for the single features a carefully curated hearth scene from the singer-songwriter's home in Leith. The collection of art, photographs and items representing people and places dear to her heart, including letters in resin and concrete made by family in both Liverpool and Leith. Life is collaboration.

The track includes gorgeous backing vocals from Edinburgh singer-songwriter Sarah Gallagher. The cute meet for the two singer songwriters came about after both artists performed at an International Women’s Day event in 2022. An instant chemistry made sure a collaboration sooner than later was on the cards.

Originally from Liverpool, SheBeat penned the song when relocating to Leith. ‘Home’ will feature on her debut album From Liverpool To Leith later this year.

An album 10 years in the making, ‘From Liverpool to Leith’ out in November 2024, will feature a community of wonderful musicians and singers from 10 years on the road as a troubadour. The album will be a celebration of the magic of music and the collaborative community it creates.

Lyrics:

Always in a hurry, don’t know why

Living in the fast lane, rushing by

I don’t mind the passing of the time

Just getting by

Home, home is where my love is

Home, home, where my lover is

Watch the sun fade, drink some wine

Walking through the Starbank, feeling fine

Wanna stay here, you and me belong together

Just getting by

Home, home, where my love is

Home, home, where my lover is

Wanna stay home with you

Wanna be home with you

Wanna make home with you

(repeat)

Home, home, where my love is

Home, home, where my lover is

BIO

SheBeat is the artist name for singer songwriter Jodie Schofield, based in Leith. Indie folk-pop storytelling songs with influences from 60s, 90s and now. A passionate music fan since she was a child, SheBeat only started writing songs and playing guitar in her 30s. This late bloomer loves to perform live to audiences of all sizes and over the past 10 years has collaborated with many musicians and producers to create music and live events.

Originally from Liverpool, the artist started performing in Liverpool in 2013 and published a self-titled EP in 2014 with the support of Peter Jackson (We Are Catchers) on keys and producer Darren Jones.

After playing popular local and regional NW events and music festivals including Liverpool Soundcity, the artist relocated to Cornwall and published second EP Feels Like, named after the title track. This EP was recorded in Liverpool's famous Motor Museum Studios with producer James Mellor.

A third EP Catch Your Breath in 2019 was produced with Jack Tasker at his home studio in Birmingham, where SheBeat had moved to, this time friend Dave Ridley co-wrote a track (Untethered) and provided backing vocals.

SheBeat then released a Leap Day single Marry Me (2020) produced by Jack Tasker, followed by a flurry of singles: Lockdown Limbo (2020), Believe (2021), So into You (2021), Homecoming Queen (2021) all produced at home with Ian White (Sons of the Descent/ The Wendys).
